The philosophical discussion about languages is gradually becoming a discussion about everything. Funny, isn't it? By the way, today I had another argument with one of innumerable matrixnonbelievers. I was so nervous, especially when heard "Nine hours one dialog? I'll go crazy!" that couldn't explain my point of view again. Should I start taking tranquilizers?
Еще один Сергей писал(а):Oh, I didn’t know that. This is interesting. Could you recommend one of those… er… I don’t know, cartoons maybe?
Sure. I haven't seen as plenty as some fans have, but most of the series I picked were exactly the right choice, and those I'll introduce you with pleasure. That's only to name a few:
1.
Elfen Lied - the very first series I've seen. A girl, who is not actually a girl but a 'species', runaway from the lab, causes chaos and panic around, and suffers from multiple personality disorder. Public opinions are sharply divided, ranging from those who say it's a masterpiece to those who say it's crap. I am among the first, although there are some moments that annoy me (e.g. when the girl's breast or other body part is suddenly naked - it has nothing to do with the plot and is made out of sheer fan service, that is, for guys). But on the whole, it was wonderful to see, especially for the first time.
2.
Hikaru no Go - a sport series about a boy who met an ancient spirit of a brilliant Go player and decided to start playing this game. He is learning how to compete, master the skills, confront dishonest players and much more. All the characters have distinctive and lively personalities. 75 episodes - never boring. A very good one. Highly recommend.
3.
Barefoot Gen - full-length Hiroshima historical drama. No comments.
4.
Usavich. I love it! This is about two Russian rabbits imprisoned in Japanese jail. One of the brightest works in "what-the-hell-did-they-smoke?" style. 39 very short (about 1.5 min.) episodes, doesn't require translation. Sometimes they speak a few words in a wacky kind of Russian. Must see.
5.
Death Note - a popular psychological thriller, maybe you heard about it. A smart school student found the 'death note' that gods had occasionally lost, and decided to proclaim himself the Justice For All. And on the other hand, a talented detective is trying to find out who this mysterious killer can possibly be. First half (somewhere up to 19th episode) is great, and the rest.. personally I didn't like it. It's just not the same.
6.
Oruchuban Ebichu - that's a sitcom. A simple and naive she-hamster tries to help her bad-tempered mistress to fix her personal life problems. Black humor, crazy funny but so vulgar, it took me a few episodes to adapt.
7.
FLCL - strange story involving robots, school students and a factory suburb. It's difficult to tell what it's all about, but I liked it very much. The soundtrack is also remarkable.
8.
Full Metal Panic. A young boy who's a high-skilled and experienced soldier from an anti-terrorist organisation, has problems with living in normal society because he always sees the danger, which results in funny situations. I've seen the Season 1 - sometimes very cool, sometimes boring, and Fumoffu - a sitcom, always cool and never boring. The latter can be seen independently on the main line.
9.
Full Metal Alchemist. The plot goes this way: two brothers had lost their mother and decided to use alchemy to resurrect her, which led to some unpleasant consequences. What was later I don't know yet. Everybody who saw the whole series say it's simply excellent, that's why I thought it would not hurt to mention this one.
10.
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. Very nice time travel movie, sometimes frightening, sometimes meditative, sometimes sad. Full-length.
11.
Le Portrait de Petit Cossette. That one has much gothic in it, and I have a soft spot for gothic. Not sure about you, but.. let it stay in the list.
Oh, how many! I think that'll do...

As you might've noticed, there is a wide variety of genres. Many more than I named. Actually, "Japanese animation", as well as "Hollywood cinematography", is such a vague notion! Very hard to generalize.
And I need to say that all the cartoons are better be watched in the original language, with Russian/English subtitles. You can certainly guess why. Russian subtitles vary greatly in quality (especially fansubs), but among English subs, I've never met bad ones.
Еще один Сергей писал(а):It seems to me you know something about Japanese culture, so maybe you could answer a little question.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0nfPDR3gGQc The red thing in the end, what is it? Is it a heart? What does it mean?
Well, this heart has an unusual look, more like fire. Judging by what happened in the end, he gained his life power. Red color, among its other meanings, symbolizes life power, and fire also does. All the evidence fits.

I'm not an expert and can't be sure though.
Еще один Сергей писал(а):Then why do you think those characters are so popular?
I always knew that they are popular among girls, but was not so sure that they are popular among guys. Especially older generation. They prefer something more 'womanly'. Here's a real example. A few years ago I occasionally read an article about the pop singer Glukoza. You probably know her, once she used to be on TV and radio all day long. And the journalist who interviewed her, prefaced the article this way: "Frankly speaking, I was a little bit afraid, awaiting the 'cool girl' from the clip, with big boots and other attributes. I'm not a teenager anymore to be delighted by this kind of image. But what I saw was a beautiful and good-mannered young lady. It was a very nice surprise". Haha, and your opinion was exactly the same kind of surprise for
me.
Еще один Сергей писал(а):Hmmm, this is a tough one. 1. I’ve never been there. All I know about how they act in public places is from the books, movies and from what they tell me about it. 2. I live in place where it’s okay to start conversations on the streets. 3. I like talking to strangers.
As you probably already guessed, I can’t see the difference. But it’s just me. I’m sure there is a difference, I just can’t see it.
*puzzling over this mysterious place where you live* Fine. Let's take another look. Did you notice that when a westerner is speaking, he is very open in facial expression, his face is always moving, he is always moving himself. How many of adult Russian people behave like this?
Еще один Сергей писал(а):By the way, is it okay to say ‘it’ about a child if I don’t know its sex?
Looks like the auto-correction here was finally switched off. Huff. What a relief!
I don't know... In theory it's okay, especially when you speak about a baby (very little one). But i never heard anyone say so.
